  • A SHORT COURSE ON CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS FOR WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT;Wastewater, Stormwater and other Non-Point Sources May 19-23, 1997 Arcata, California,

The Humboldt State University's Environmental Resources Engineering. Department is offering a short course on the use of free surface constructed wetlands for treatment of wastewater. The short course will be held May 19-23, 1997 on the Humboldt State campus in Arcata, California, and is scheduled to involve five training days, totaling 50 hours. This course will be directed by Dr. Robert Gearheart and is intended for design engineers and wetland scientists who are interested or involved in the planning, designing, and management of wetlands for wastewater treatment and pollution abatement.

    COURSE SUBJECTS WILL INCLUDE:

1 Introduction to Wetland Systems, 2.Wetland Ecology, 3. Wetland Hydrology, 4. Wetland Chemistry / Water Quality, 5. Wetland Soils, 6. Wetland Plants, 7. Wetland Microbial Ecology, 8. Wetland Hydraulics, 9. Modeling Constructed Wetlands, 10. Facility Planning Considerations-Application, 11. Basis for Design, 12. Design Features, 13. Construction-Specifications, 14. Operation and Maintenance, 15. Cost / Benefits, 16. Regulatory Issues

Dr. Gearheart and others have been involved with the development of the Arcata wetland treatment project and many other wetland treatment systems in the west as well as internationally. The proximity of the campus to many natural and constructed wetland systems provides a unique opportunity to gain engineering knowledge and on-site/hands-on experience with this technology.

The course will cost $750.00 and which will include the cost of literature materials, field trips and computer software. If you would like to take the course for units 1-3 there would be an additional $30 charge per unit. Due to limited space registration is required by May 1, 1997. For more information, including transportation and lodging questions, please contact Barbara Smith at Humboldt State University's Environmental Resources Engineering Department, (707) 826-3619 or e-mail Barbara Smith.
